Red Desert

Here I’m taking the form of Antonioni’s 1964 film Red Desert - its exploratory and improvisatory play and using a game engine to build unpredictable immersive sonic scenes, mirroring the film’s liberated style. In live performance the 5.1 soundscape surrounds the listeners as I play small electronic gadgets in response to the unpredictable scenes that unfold.

Antonioni’s film portrays a troubled post WW2 world where grimy and polluting factories are supplanting the natural flows and rhythms of nature. The film plays out the neurosis of young mother Giuliana as she struggles to belong in the world.

Shots move in an out of focus, space is compressed, and monochromatic. Yet there are also vivid colours, belching steam, fire, and industrial drones. With its long takes and "strange" electronic music, it resembles a sci-fi movie.

The original music in the film Red Desert was composed by Giovanni Fusco, with some electronic music by Vittorio Gelmetti.
